Barangaroo South
August 17, 2010 | Post in Architecture

The new revised concept plan for the Barangaroo South development has been submitted to the Dapartment of Planning NSW for the public to comment until September 10.

The proposal is believed to be over the limit of the original approved building height that can impact on casting shadows over the existing Pyrmont waterfront site during the winter morning sun, as well as the northern side of King Street Wharf during 12pm noon lunch time in Winter.

Five out of six towers proposals increase tower heights and therefore create enormous seawalls of building mass along the Barangaroo promenade and Barangaroo waterfront.

The 'blade towers' fan out east- west direction, therefore allowing greater harbour view from CBD centre. However, there could be problems of westerly wind creating severe wind tunnel funneling through narrow gaps between these fan-wall of blade towers.

The increase in building height on these towers will stimulate greater wind force and increase wind velocity, and therefore greater impact on wind swipe through walls of buildings into pedestrian street level of Hickson road. The design elements of wind protection in the pedestrian street level is crucial to order to resolve the wind gale effects.

The visual impact of these towers are dramatic, compared with existing surrounding buildings to the south, thus creating prolong shadows in winter.

The overall proposal for the Barangaroo South development is very dense, overly scale and overly populated. The development is not 'blend' well with existing surrounding buildings and is not symphathetic to the existing scale of the adjoinding buildings, particularly in northern side of King Street Wharf.

Anyway, once it's built, we will all get use to it, visually....and accept it as it is for the future generation to live, work and play...

Barangaroo South will be Sydney's global urban development with public domain waterfront promenade, retail street precinct with department store, supermarkets, waterfront restaurants, international landmark hotel, public library and museum for Barangaroo, prestige residential apartments and commercial office towers for global financial centres, international headquarters and businesses in Australia.
